Charity donations continue to turn digital
Feb 10
Digital is now really starting to flex its muscles, with online income growing and traditional fundraising tactics starting to be questioned, suggests data from our clients and the charity sector press.
Donations made to charities online continues to show strong growth based on a review of a number of our clients. This shows that their online income increased by between 50% and 60% during 2009.
Those clients who ran fundraising campaigns as a result of the tragic earthquake in Haiti this year, saw their online donations increase by up to 98% for January 2010. Even those charities who didn't run specific Haiti appeals, but who operate in the country, saw an increase in their online donations during January. We'd suggest this shows supporters responding to the situation in Haiti by donating to those organisations with whom they have an existing relationship.
These trends mirror the experiences of the DEC who as of 27 Jan 2010 had received a third of income to their Haiti appeal online, and also highlighted the significant role that social media has played in generating donations. Click here for the full story.
Following swiftly after this is the British Heart Foundation's announcement that they won't be incorporating direct mail within their National Heart Month campaign, a decision that we suspect more and more charities will make over the next 12 months as they begin grasp the opportunities of moving into digital.
